OH GOD WHY?!

Hello Podcastlandbergville,

For years my male friends and I have had discussions on the subject of why women, for the most part, don’t like the sub-genre of rock music known as progressive rock. I wasn’t really buying their theories as they had come from men. So I decided to go right to the source: women.

I am neither an expert on prog rock nor women. I don’t have a degree in psychology, sociology, music history, women’s studies, or broadcasting. I’m just a dude who likes prog rock, women, beer, and cigarettes, who’s trying to get to the bottom of this myth and have some fun in the process.

I’ve selected five songs from five bands that I feel represent the classic period for this genre. I then invited some women over, conducted short interviews, asked them to listen to these five songs, and talk about what they are thinking and feeling while on this sonic journey.

In the process of this interview guests are armed with a “panic button”. Should the music become too intolerable they can safely “tap out” at any moment. No women have been harmed during an interview… probably. My guests also have the option of an intermission where sonic palate cleansers are available. Guests have three songs to choose from: “Careless Whisper” by WHAM!, “I Ran” by Flock of Seagulls, or “Sweet Dreams” by The Eurythmics. All three of these songs have proven effective in successfully eradicating the unpleasant after effects that prog rock can sometimes have. Clearly none of this is to be taken too seriously, so let’s relax, file this under light entertainment, pour ourselves a drink, and have some laughs.

As ever,

Matt

WHO'S IDEA WAS THIS?!

Dearest listeners,

I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1972, a rich white orphan heir to a chain of discount liposuction clinics for blind anorexics. By the age of -3 I had lost my misfortune at the track and moved into an apartment in Brooklyn where I ran the corset shop below with my two adopted infant fathers, Theopolus J. Hungadunga and Miles DeMilo Smackman. When this too failed I decided to play guitar in a Schizophrenic Satirical Audio Theatrics band run by a heat crazed ex-KGB agent dubbed The Dimitri Gurevitch Quintette. This too was a ghastly mistake that nearly cost me my life, but I won’t go into that now. These days I enjoy the simple pleasures, listening to records, drinking scotch, smoking cigarettes and trying to find a respectable woman who likes a prog rock album now and again.

As ever,
Matt
